From Concept to Physical Part in Days, Not Weeks

3D Printing & Prototyping

EDS offers industrial 3D printing for rapid prototyping, proof-of-concept models, jigs and fixtures, and low-volume production parts. Our 3D printing service is run by the same engineering team that manages our metal fabrication, which means we understand how printed parts relate to the final manufactured product — and can advise on when 3D printing is the right solution versus traditional manufacturing methods.

For prototyping, 3D printing lets you test form, fit, and function before committing to tooling or production setup costs. A printed prototype of a new bracket design can be checked against the installation environment, tested for clearance issues, and revised in a matter of days rather than weeks. This is particularly valuable for custom fabrication projects where the design is being developed in collaboration with the client.

Beyond prototyping, we use 3D printing for manufacturing aids — welding jigs, assembly fixtures, gauges, and templates that support our production processes. These are functional tools that improve the consistency and efficiency of our fabrication work, and they can be produced quickly and modified easily as processes evolve.

For small production runs where traditional manufacturing isn’t cost-effective, 3D printing can produce functional end-use parts directly. This applies particularly to complex geometries that would be difficult or expensive to machine conventionally, or to components needed in quantities too small to justify tooling investment. Our engineers can assess whether a component is suitable for 3D printing based on the material requirements, dimensional tolerances, and operating environment.

Applications

  • Functional prototypes to demonstrate fit, form, and function
  • Concept models for client presentations and design reviews
  • Test fixtures and jigs for manufacturing processes
  • Replacement components for legacy equipment where tooling no longer exists
  • Small production runs where traditional manufacturing isn’t economical
  • 3D CAD design and printing services

Because we also run a full metal fabrication facility, we can take your proven prototype and transition it to production manufacturing without changing partners.
